Rutgers University-Newark Campus Master Plan
Sam Schwartz was retained by Rutgers University to provide transportation planning and traffic engineering services for the update of the Rutgers-Newark Campus Master Plan. The firm produced alternative concept designs for improving and strengthening the connections between the main campus and new campus development to the north as well as to downtown, adjacent neighborhoods and transit facilities.
Our work focused on the two major streets running through the campus, Washington Street and University Avenue. The concept designs aim to calm traffic and improve access and circulation at the same time. Accommodations were made for transit vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles. Sam Schwartz conducted a community workshop to solicit discussion and feedback on the issues and possible solutions. The alternative concepts were presented to the city and transit operating agency for their review and input.
