Poughkeepsie City Center Connectivity Project
Downtown Poughkeepsie is dominated by the surrounding state highway arterial system, which shuttles high volumes of vehicles through the city at fast speeds while cutting off the central business district from the surrounding neighborhoods. With the help of a Cleaner, Greener Communities grant from NYSERDA, Sam Schwartz is developing a plan to complete Market Street and the surrounding roadway network so that they better serve all users and helps to stimulate the local economy and street life.
The central pieces of this effort are a robust public outreach program, a holistic evaluation of alternative designs using a range of performance measures, and a demonstration project implemented with temporary materials. The pilot is being used to get the community excited about the potential of their streets, laying the groundwork for rapid implementation of changes that will promote the city center as the business, retail, and cultural hub of the region.
