Palm Avenue Road Diet
The City of Tampa selected Sam Schwartz to implement a road diet for Palm Avenue from North Boulevard to Nebraska Avenue. Due to decreasing traffic volumes, the four lane undivided roadway was reconstructed with five-foot bike lanes and intermittent pedestrian refuge medians, ranging in width from 10 feet to 16 feet. A mid-block crossing was designed for the YMCA and signal modifications were made at the intersections of Palm Avenue and Florida Avenue and Palm Avenue at Tampa Avenue. This important roadway connects North Tampa to Ybor City and now provides a multi-modal route for a key bicyclist and pedestrian corridor.
