IndyGo 20-Year Maintenance & Fuel Projections
Sam Schwartz was hired to model how IndyGo’s bus fleet costs might change as the agency considers bold shifts to its fleet (increasing use of electric buses) and its service (expand bus rapid transit and converting to a grid network). Sam Schwartz has used data from the National Transit Database to select peer agencies that have significant electric bus experience, a similar scale of operations, and a similar maintenance cost structure. This allowed us to identify areas in which IndyGo’s plans were similar and dissimilar to peers.
We also developed a cost model to estimate future fuel costs, electricity costs, and maintenance parts and labor based on historical data and IndyGo’s planned fleet and service. This allowed us to anticipate how future maintenance staffing needs will grow over time for various disciplines. The final version of this work will yield financial metrics that IndyGo can use for internal budgeting.
